Beginning March 13,the BlackBerry Q10 will have a software update to BlackBerry OS 10.2.1.2228 via OTA and BlackBerry Link. This update improves the user interface, software performance, and adds some new features.

You can update in two ways:

  • Over the air (OTA) update
  • Manual download using BlackBerry Link

Other versions

T-Mobile and BlackBerry will not send you a software update.

Devices with non-T-Mobile software versions are out of warranty and do not receive updates.

Check software version

To check the current software version, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, touch the Status bar and slide down.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Tap Category, and then select OS from the drop-down menu.
  5. View the 'OS Version' information.

Download update from BlackBerry

You can check for updates and request to download the update from the BlackBerry servers. To check for updates and download, follow these steps:

Note: Keep your device connected to a power source while your software is updating.

  1. From any Home screen, touch the Status bar and slide down.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll down to and tap Software Updates.
    • Note: It is not recommended to update over Wi-Fi at this time.
  4. Tap Update.
  5. Review the BlackBerry Agreement screen, and then tap I Agree.
  6. When the download and installation processes are complete, tap Restart Now.
  7. After the device restarts, tap OK.
  8. If necessary, review the Remote Log Collection feature details, and then tap Dismiss

Manually update over USB using BlackBerry Link

You can update your device software through BlackBerry Link on your computer. To manually update over a USB cable, follow these steps:

  • Connect the small end of your USB cable to your device and the large end of the cable to your computer.
  • If necessary, download and install the BlackBerry Link software on your computer.
    Note: Software may be downloaded through the connection prompt or www.blackberry.com/BlackBerryLink.
  • Open BlackBerry Link. If a new software update is available, a red notification star symbol appears on the BLACKBERRY tab.

  • Hover over the BLACKBERRY tab, and then click Install Update.
  • Click Install Update again.
    Note: Do not disconnect device during update.

    Over the Air (OTA) update

    After receiving a notification that you received the OTA update, you may download it. To download, follow these steps:

    1. Tap the update notification.
    2. Tap the open icon at the bottom of the screen.
    3. Tap Update.
    4. Review the BlackBerry Agreement screen, and then tap I Agree.
    5. When the download and installation processes are complete, tap Restart Now.
    6. After the device restarts, tap OK.
    7. If necessary, review the Remote Log Collection feature details, and then tap Dismiss.
